In the year 2000

I work for a pretty cool magazine. Technology Review is the oldest tech magazine in the world, founded in 1899. There have been over 700 issues published. Recently we began digitally archiving old issues. As I was browsing I came across some really amazing, and not so amazing, cover designs. The 60′s produced some great work. The covers were simple, bold, and usually abstract. There were no cover lines to distract from the image. Here are a few really nice ones.

HTML5

Check out these really neat examples of what HTML5 can do by this guy Mr.doob, who was responsible for creating that crazy Arcade Fire video, The Wilderness Downtown. The potential applications of this technology, other than just being fun to play with, seem endless. Unfortunately it’s going to be a while before all browsers are HTML5 compatible (I’m looking at you, IE), but at least I’ll have some time to try to wrap my head around how to use and code it.

Info graphics

The New York Times always has fantastic info graphics. Clear, simple, and informative. Here are a few recent ones regarding sugar consumption in the U.S. It is much easier to grasp how much a wheel barrel full of sugar is, versus just saying 45.3 pounds per year. Yuck. Read the full story here.

March MIT News

The March/April ’10 issue of MIT News contains some of my favorite commissioned art. I love being able to work with such talented artists.

Christopher Churchill took beautifully simple portraits of Mark Bear and Matthew Goodwin, two MIT researchers working on understanding the causes of autism.

The cover illustration, by Marcos Chin, did an impressive job of visualizing the complicated and often misunderstood symptoms of autism. The illustration was also included in this year’s American Illustration Annual.
